It would undoubtedly be an exaggeration to say that there is a glut of technical books on the Eucharist and a dearth of spiritual literature on the subject. Yet this extreme statement does cover an element of truth. We are no longer in the 1960s, which knew a sudden awakening of interest in the Eucharist that resulted in a spate of books and articles on this topic, most of which, however, were confined to just one aspect of the mystery: the fairly abstruse problem of the eucharistic conversion, of the change, that is, of bread and wine into the person of Christ. Theologians as well as the ordinary faithful had grown increasingly dissatisfied with the Catholic explanation scrupulously handed down from the time of the council of Trent, and widespread dissatisfaction with the theory quickly led to its banishment from the theological field. The walls of the traditional explanation were crumbling and no amount of repair work would be able to strengthen the disintegrating structure. And so, in spite of the props liberally supplied by the central authority the entire edifice came down with a crash. The old theory - for it was no more than a theory, not an essential tenet of our eucharistic faith — soon fell into desuetude and was almost entirely discarded. Theologians quickly put paid to the traditional conception and its demise was hardly mourned by anyone. It was simply dead, may it rest in peace.
